Bairro Alto’s crimson living room
The Velvet Room hides in plain sight on Travessa da Queimada, in the middle of Bairro Alto’s nightly carnival — one more doorway in a street full of them, marked by a single red bulb. Inside, the name delivers: a low-ceilinged room upholstered within an inch of its life, crimson velvet on the walls, mismatched chandeliers, and a small corner stage that hosts the loosest, warmest cabaret program in Lisbon.
Where Obsidian is a production, the Velvet Room is a party. Shows happen — burlesque numbers, a drag act on Wednesdays that has its own following, the occasional fado singer at 04:00 doing something entirely unofficial — but the room itself is the show: dancers, regulars, tourists who wandered in confused and stayed until close, all packed into Bairro Alto’s most comfortable hundred square metres.
The program, such as it is
Wednesday is cabaret night proper, with the drag headliner. Thursday to Saturday, burlesque sets run at midnight, 02:00 and 03:30, with the room dancing to everything from northern soul to Brazilian funk in between. Nothing starts on time and nobody has ever complained. The dancers mingle at the bar between sets, and private dances happen behind the velvet curtain at the back — €25, posted on a hand-painted sign, price unchanged since the room opened.
Drinks and damage
The bar is honest Bairro Alto: caipirinhas and ginjinha are the currency, cocktails cost less than downhill in Chiado, and the card minimum is €25 that you will hit without noticing. Entry is free before midnight; after that, €15 with a drink included — which, given that midnight is when Bairro Alto starts, is effectively the room’s cover charge and everyone treats it as fair.
How to do it right
Come as part of a Bairro Alto crawl — the room rewards guests who arrive already warm. Wednesday for the cabaret if you want a seat, Saturday if you want the crush. Talk to people; this is the one club in Lisbon where that is the point. And if a small woman with grey hair takes the stage around 04:00 and the room falls silent — stay. That is Dona Amélia, she runs the bar, and her fado is not on any program.
