Forty years on Pink Street

Tokyo Bar has anchored Rua Nova do Carvalho for around four decades, long before the street was painted pink and rebranded for tourists. It is a live-music and late-night dance bar, dark and busy, the kind of room where a band or DJ holds the floor rather than a playlist ticking over in the background. It opens Wednesday to Saturday and keeps going until dawn.

Who you’ll find here

The crowd is genuinely multicultural — Lisbon regulars, Erasmus students, travellers who wandered off the Pink Street strip and stayed. It is packed and social rather than a designated meet-singles venue, but the density and the shared focus on the music make it easy to fall into conversation. Come for the atmosphere and the late hours more than for any promise on a dating list.

Drinks, music and hours

Beers run about €3 to €5 and cocktails €7 to €10, typical for the street. Cover depends on the night’s programming, from free entry to a ticketed headline act. Live acts and DJs carry the room from 22:00 until 06:00, so it is very much an all-night proposition. The bar is cashless and runs its own app, so leave the coins at home.

Practical notes

It sits right on Pink Street in Cais do Sodré, minutes from the station and the riverside, surrounded by the rest of the strip’s bars and clubs. Staff are used to an English-speaking crowd. Because it only opens four nights a week, check what’s on before you commit your evening — and remember it is card-only when you get to the bar.
