Water works on the northern edge

H2ON is the four-star end of the greater-Lisbon motel scene: a water-themed house of 47 rooms in Frielas, Loures, roughly twenty minutes north of the centre. It carries the highest score of any motel on the national directory — 4.58 out of 5 — and runs around the clock, restaurant included, though the kitchen politely drops to snacks after eleven at night.

A ladder of city names

Rooms are named for cities and priced as a ladder. Brighton opens the bidding at €67 for four hours; Saigon, the top of the house, closes it at €660 for a full day. Climbing between them you collect jacuzzis, tantric shower chairs, waterbeds, double showers and — in Washington, Kingston, Lyon and Saigon — a private indoor pool. Lyon doubles as the accessible room, with a double garage thrown in.

The garage does the talking

Every room has its own private garage, so the walk from car to bed happens without an audience. Stays come in four blocks — 4, 6, 12 or 24 hours — and the two longer formats fold in breakfast. Twenty-four-hour room service covers everything in between, which is the point of a motel that never actually closes.

Before you drive out
