On the other side, Parque Eduardo VII climbs uphill: formal hedges, a view back down over the city and the river at the top.

At night the area empties in a way the rest of central Lisbon doesn’t. The offices close, the avenue quietens, and what’s left is hotel bars and a handful of restaurants. Nobody comes here for the nightlife. People come here because it’s where the hotels are and because everything else in Lisbon is fifteen minutes away.

Where you’ll actually meet in Marquês de Pombal

Hotels, overwhelmingly. This is the most hotel-dense pocket of the city, and the large international properties here are entirely used to guests receiving visitors — reception staff at that level of hotel are trained to be uninterested, and they are. If you’re travelling for business and want the least friction, this is the easiest neighbourhood in Lisbon.

There are apartments too, particularly on the residential side towards Rato, but the balance here tilts more towards hotels than anywhere else in the city.

Getting around Marquês de Pombal

About as good as Lisbon gets. Two Metro lines meet at Marquês de Pombal — blue and yellow — which puts the airport, Baixa and most of the city within a short ride. Taxis queue outside every hotel. Uber is quick and cheap, and unlike in the older neighbourhoods, cars can actually get to the door.

If you’re driving, most hotels have parking, which is not something you can say about Alfama or Bairro Alto.

One honest note

You won’t fall in love with Marquês de Pombal. It’s a business district with a park at one end and a statue in the middle, and it has roughly the atmosphere you’d expect from that. What it has instead is convenience: hotels that don’t ask questions, transport that works, and a location that puts the whole city fifteen minutes away. For a lot of people, particularly anyone here for work, that’s the right trade.
