Madeira’s mythical late club
Vespas opened in 1980 and was, for years, the only nightclub on the island — a status that’s earned it the ‘mythical’ and ‘legendary’ tags that still follow it around Funchal’s nightlife. It sits on Avenida Sá Carneiro along the east seafront near the port, on the approach to the Old Town. Effectively a weekend club, it’s the place the island’s night ends up when everywhere else has closed.

This is the archetypal stay-out-till-dawn room, and it carries the strongest meet-people reputation on the island precisely because it’s where the weekend crowd converges. The mix is tourist and local, single and social, spread across three distinct spaces so the room never feels one-note. Drinks, music and hours
Entry runs €5 to €20 depending on the night and event. Inside, three spaces split the crowd: Vespas plays house, Jam runs 70s, 80s and 90s disco-funk-pop, and Marginal handles techno and alternative, all served by seven bars. It opens Friday and Saturday from around 23:00 and runs to roughly 07:00, making it a genuine after-hours destination rather than an early-evening bar.
Practical notes
Both of the club’s associated web domains are dead, so check its Facebook and Instagram for event nights and any themed programming. It’s on the seafront approach to the Old Town, walkable from the centre and the port zone. Cards are accepted and English-speaking staff are common.
