Motel Jardim Secreto takes its name literally: behind an anonymous wall on the Via Norte in Matosinhos hides the north’s most unexpected motel courtyard — a genuine garden, decades old, with the rooms arranged around it like a secret village. Camellias, a fig tree, the sound of a fountain instead of the ring road. It should not work as a motel and it works beautifully.

Ten rooms, each with its private garage on the outer ring and its window opening onto the inner garden — a layout that delivers the format’s total privacy while replacing its usual concrete soul with green. The rooms themselves are simple and warm: wooden floors, good beds, showers with proper pressure, and the garden light doing more for the atmosphere than any mood-lighting system ever has. Two garden suites open directly onto private corners of the courtyard itself, with outdoor tubs under the fig tree’s end of the canopy.
The gentle option
Every region’s motel scene has its spectrum, and the Jardim is the north’s gentle end: less mirror-ceiling theatre, more actual romance. It is the address for anniversaries, for reunions that deserve better than efficiency, for first afternoons that might matter — and for companions whose regulars prefer warmth over chrome. The airport is six minutes away, which the house mentions quietly and its guests use often.
Practical softness
The pricing is northern-honest: €30 opens the door, the garden suites peak at €75, and the full night is the cheapest in the Porto area for what it delivers. The fountain runs all night. The fig tree drops figs in September and the staff leave them at the hatch in paper bags, which is the most Jardim Secreto thing that could possibly be true.
