Casino Lounge Funchal

Madeira after the casino closes its tables

Casino Lounge Funchal sits on Avenida do Infante directly opposite the casino gardens, and its whole identity flows from that geography: when the tables wind down, the night walks across the road. Friday and Saturday nights only — the island does not pretend to need more — the Lounge runs Madeira’s one true late-night show room: a curved bar in dark wood and brass, a small stage with a big lighting rig, and a terrace where the Atlantic breeze does the air conditioning.

The crowd is the island’s most international mix: hotel guests from the Lido strip, cruise passengers on overnight calls, casino winners in a generous mood and casino losers in a philosophical one, stirred together with Funchal locals who have made the Lounge their weekend institution since it opened.

The show, island-sized

Sets run at midnight and 02:00: burlesque and dance numbers scaled honestly to the room — polished, warm, closer to cabaret than spectacle, with performers who work the terrace between sets and remember faces from one summer to the next. The dance floor takes over after each set; the DJ policy is simple (nothing you cannot dance to) and the room obeys it until four.

Poncha and the pace of the island

Entry is €20 with a welcome cocktail — take the poncha option, it is made properly — and the bar runs island-fair prices from there. Private lounge seating on the terrace side can be reserved with a bottle, and the Lounge’s signature order, a bottle of Madeira wine served chilled with dark chocolate, is the island’s answer to a champagne ritual and converts sceptics weekly.

Making the night work

Combine it: dinner in Funchal, an hour at the casino tables across the road, then the Lounge from midnight — that sequence is the island’s classic big night and the geography was designed for it. Dress resort-elegant; the door refuses beachwear with island politeness. And book terrace seating in summer, when cruise season doubles the crowd and the Atlantic-side tables become the best seats on the island after dark.
